AI adoption across the Nordics and Benelux has reached 50 %, up from 37 % last year, representing 35 % yearon-year growth. Yet this headline obscures a structural problem: 54 % of adopting businesses remain at the most basic stage of AI use, deploying off-the-shelf chatbots for routine tasks. Only 28 % have reached transformative adoption, where AI enables new products, operating models and revenue streams. At current growth rates, it will take until 2030 for half of the region’ s AI-adopting businesses to reach this advanced stage.

The next wave of AI – agentic systems that plan, reason and execute multistep workflows autonomously – will accelerate this divergence. Agentic AI is not a marginal upgrade over chatbots. It represents a fundamental architectural shift: from reactive systems that answer questions to autonomous systems that execute business processes end-toend. Among Nordic enterprises, only 21 % feel ready to adopt this technology, compared to 81 % of startups.

According to Gartner, over 40 % of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027 due to escalating costs 1, undefined business value, or poor risk management.
