DR LAWRENCE WEE

DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS AND ECOSYSTEMS
Dr Lawrence Wee is Director of Business and Ecosystems at the Infocomm Media Development Authority( IMDA), where he leads strategic collaborations to accelerate enterprise adoption of AI and emerging technologies.
He began his career in public sector R & D, founding the Healthcare and Biomedical Analytics Laboratory at the Institute of Infocomm Research( I2R). He has since held senior roles across Zuellig Pharma and Allianz Asia-Pacific, building regional data science capabilities, before returning to public service at the Ministry of Health to drive AI strategy in healthcare.
Dr Wee holds a PhD in Computational Biology from the National University of Singapore and is an Associate Faculty at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
That tension – between the demands of an advanced digital economy and the physical and environmental constraints of a small island state – runs through much of IMDA’ s work. Singapore’ s limited land area constrains data centre expansion, its energy grid faces competing demands and its ambitions in AI require ever-greater compute intensity. It also explains why the authority spans a broader remit than many comparable national bodies, bringing together engineering, policy, applied research and industry development under a unified strategic direction.
Building green software practice from the ground up Lawrence’ s work in digital sustainability is grounded in a practical, sector-facing approach. IMDA conducted green software trials, which saw businesses achieving at least 20 % reductions in carbon emissions, costs and energy usage by adopting green software practices. To equip more businesses with the knowledge to adopt green software practices, IMDA has developed the Practical Green Software Guide for Enterprises, which breaks down sustainability into actionable technical steps.
“ We launched the Practical Green Software Playbook for Enterprises,” Lawrence explains.“ We can break it down into three areas: tips to tell enterprises how to start measuring and monitoring energy consumption, tips around how to optimise the way
