THAI UNION

Seafood products provide critical micronutrients, omega-3 and high-quality proteins to support healthy diets. They play an important role across many global diets, with aquatic foods among the most affordable and accessible protein sources.

Despite its leading position, the seafood industry faces threats from overfishing, climate change and habitat destruction. Throughout the sector, companies are collaborating to help protect the future of seafood production.
Thai Union is one of the largest players in the seafood industry, owning international brands like John West, Chicken of the Sea and Petit Navire.
It manufactures and sells ambient and frozen seafood, as well as pet food, aquafeed and supplements. Its SeaChange 2030 strategy sets out 11 interconnected commitments to protect people and the planet.
Thai Union’ s Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer, Adam Brennan, is responsible for spearheading this strategy. This involves setting the aspirations, vision and direction, as well as overseeing its execution across Thai Union’ s manufacturing sites and global sourcing base.
Adam moved to Southeast Asia at the age of 10 and saw first-hand the impact this new wave of industrialisation was having on the continent. Since then, Adam has spent his entire career working across Asia’ s consumer goods supply chains.
Adam shares his insights with Sustainability Magazine.

“Collaboration is not a side component, it brings partnerships to create the scale the industry needs”

Q. WHAT IS THAI UNION’ S CORE MISSION?

» Our core purpose is healthy living and healthy oceans. Everything we do from a corporate and business strategy all works towards one of those two elements.

Seafood is inherently a healthy, nutritious, affordable protein. And as we know, there is a big shift right now in protein consumption around the world, so we believe that seafood and blue foods have a huge role to play in providing those healthy, nutritious proteins.
At the same time, we fully acknowledge that we need to do that in a responsible manner – that’ s where Healthy Oceans really comes into play. We rely on a natural resource. We need to protect that natural resource so that we can continue supplying our loved products around the world.
