system like email filters, web filters and firewalls.“ I have a layered approach with different vendors,” he says.
Another constraint is his smaller team with 12 individuals in IT where half of them are in network infrastructure and security.“ I employ some outside SOC services because of this,” he explains.“ From that point, we are pretty aggressive. We have most all the tools that we need.”
However, Ismael thinks that no cyber strategy is fool proof:“ We’ re a user click away from a breach, but it’ s about containment. It’ s about the visibility, what you can see with enough lead time.”
“ I drive them to start at the bottom and work upward because everyone in IT wants flashy tools,” Ismael says, but the main problems are vulnerabilities and the legacy patching, which he says are“ not pretty”.
“ It’ s not a glamorous job but that is evergreen and it always has to be at the top of your mind because you can have all of the best layered tools over the top of your environment and it takes one PC with unpatched vulnerabilities to get out to the wrong spot.”
This is why the team spends a lot of time legacy patching, doing the basics – the blocking and tackling. Ismael says that he’ s not one to put all of his eggs in a single basket for tools for every
ThreatLocker at TLG Speaking about visibility in their operations and network, Ismael says that adding“ ThreatLocker has probably been one of our milestones that I think I’ m very proud of with my team.”
The reason for this, he tells in the form of an anecdote, back when the company experienced a vendor side security incident a few years ago that impacted all of their locations.
When that happened, Ismael had to take a look at the infrastructure and shut down connectivity.“ We then started running our own scans and having an external company do some scans for incidents of compromise,” he recalls.
He knew that in weeks, as soon as that vendor came back and said that everything was clear, his owner and leadership group would ask him to open the link back up.
