Developed by Peterbilt,“ it’ s a very, very nice technology that allows alerts to be triaged,” Ismael says.
“ SmartLINQ is a gateway unit that is on the truck that reports back to the cloud – almost in real time – anything going on with the truck, engine or the transmission that could be service impacting and the current location of the truck,” he explains.
“ We have a group of people who watch those alerts. They can diagnose them and schedule a driver into a service centre which will cut the lead time for a truck for service. TLG service writers already know what is going on with the unit by the time they get to one of our stores.
“ Depending on the codes, we sometimes must tell drivers,‘ Hey, this is a bad code that will derate you. You need to get off the road now even if you’ re not where one of our dealerships are. We’ ll help you get to one immediately, else you’ re going to have bigger problems’.”
This level of technical capability is admirable, offering predictive maintenance before breakdown. The technical“ gamechanger” for IT, however, is using APIs which gives so much more data to work with for the dealerships IT groups.
