“ It means I don’ t have to deal with the headache of having to go in and update it, which I love.”
PCI scope and checkout experience Tokenisation is also useful because it reduces PCI compliance scope. Doug’ s point is that merchants should be able to handle sensitive data without directly touching it, but the experience around that process still has to work well.
“ At its core, tokenisation allows merchants to store card data, to process sensitive data, without having to touch it. All they get to interact with is a non-sensitive token. That’ s really what it is – we replace that sensitive data with a non-sensitive identifier.”
For this to work, Doug stresses that flexibility at the checkout layer is essential. Merchants need tokenisation to fit their own branded experiences rather than forcing them into a rigid flow.
“ You need to have those products and features that merchants can use – it needs to be flexible, something they can design and customise and white-label and make look native to their checkout page, so they can have a good user experience,” he adds.
Without that, he says, the benefits can disappear before a transaction is completed.
“ It doesn’ t do them much good if it’ s a really slow, poor user experience – they might end up losing the payment entirely.”
