sustainability is somewhat on a downward trend, and I’ ve seen people refer to us as being in a sustainability recession.
The key opportunity for us as sustainability professionals is not to look at sustainability as part of a social agenda or an environmental agenda but to look at it from an economic agenda and from a resilience agenda. That’ s how you get the topic in the boardroom. That’ s how you make sure sustainability continues to get the visibility it needs and deserves.
At Thai Union, we’ re very cognisant of how sustainability can support our growth and unlock new opportunities and revenue streams.
For example, with a tuna, there is a certain percentage of the fish that goes into human consumption. But there’ s a lot of value in the whole fish and we look at that raw material from head to tail and take a closed-loop approach. Our pet food products use red meat – designed to boost nutritional value – then tuna bones are used for calcium supplements. We take the skin of the tuna and create collagen supplements. We take the head of the tuna, we compress it and refine the oil to create fish oil supplements.
