TRANSLINK
Key partnerships for long-term success Given the relatively long lifecycle of public transport capital fleet assets – typically 30 years for trains and 15 years for buses – Translink prioritises forming long-term partnerships with key suppliers through compliant public procurement competitive tendering.
These include Wrightbus, a division of Bamford Bus Company, which has provided double-deck and single-deck service buses for the past seven years; Volvo UK for coaches; and Flowbird for modern ticketing systems.
“ We view these strategic partnerships as long-term relationships,” Mark notes.“ We are constantly challenging partners to innovate: how can that asset be refreshed? And again, through the four pillars of the Better. Connected strategy, continuous improvement: what efficiencies are you identifying that you can share with us?”
Such partnerships are structured with multiple touchpoints at operational, tactical and strategic levels, including periodic dialogue between CEOs to discuss future investment plans and organisational updates.
Ultimately, their importance cannot be overstated.
“ Without great suppliers and quality products, we wouldn’ t have a business,” Mark emphasises.“ If you don’ t have strategic relationships with the supply base to deliver the high-quality products you need, you will not drive income generation or increase passenger numbers.”
